Mariah's cover version was released as the third single from her "Music Box" album on January 15, 1994 through Columbia Records. Additionally, the song and produced by Mariah & Walter Afanasieff.

Mariah's version of "Without You" is based on the Nilsson version instead of the Badfinger version. The single was released over a week after Nilsson died of a heart attack on January 15, 1994. The single was promoted as a double A-side with the song, "Never Forget You."
Mariah said she decided to cover the song when she heard it in a restaurant [even though when she performed the song in Tokyo, Mariah said she heard the song as a young girl].

The song peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying in the top 40 for 21 weeks and stay on the Hot 100 for 2 weeks.
The song was certified Gold by the RIAA and ranked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 1994 Year-End charts. Internationally, the song was successful especially in the United Kingdom where it topped the UK Singles chart for 4 weeks and certified Gold.
