Virgin Records is a British record label founded by English entrepreneur Richard Branson, Simon Draper, and Nik Powell in 1972. It was later sold to Thorn EMI, and then, in the US, merged with Capitol Records in 2007 to create the Capitol Music Group.

Mariah signed with the label in 2001 and began a long standing relationship with label owner Richard Branson. The signing was dubbed as one of the biggest record deals at the time and the relationship was quite the same.[1]. The deal was planned to have covered 4 albums of new materials, in addition to an estimated $7-million non-recoupable payment to reimburse her for the cost of buying out the last album on her Sony contract.[2]

On January 23, 2002, Mariah was dismissed by the record label; the sales of the Glitter album being deemed as a major contributing factor to why she was dismissed from the label.[3]
