"Violent" is the third track from Chick's studio album "Someone's Ugly Daughter." It was released on September 5, 1995 through Epic Records.[2]

The song makes references to the highly acclaimed children’s television show The Magic Garden, hosted by best friends Carole Demas & Paula Janis, that aired from the 1970s to the mid-1980s.[3]

Background[]

In 1995 while working on her album Daydream, Mariah recorded a secret alternative rock album with her friend, Clarissa Dane. She would reportedly do her "alter-ego band sessions" after working on Daydream each night. She described her alter ego has being similar to Bianca Storm who appeared in the "Heartbreaker" music video. In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah expressed that recording songs for "Someone's Ugly Daughter" helped her cope with her anger.[4] It also helped Mariah get "through some dark days." Additionally, she also described the experience as "weirdly good" and "satirical."

Violent references the 1970s and mid-1980s show "The Magic Garden." Mariah also mentioned The Magic Garden in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, stating:

She wore her hair in two long ponytails, like Carole and Paula from The Magic Garden (a popular local kids’ TV show I loved, which was hosted by two young, hippie-esque women with a pink squirrel sidekick, who sang folksy songs and told stories, in the seventies and early eighties).

Carole & Paula were so moved by the mention that they sent Mariah a video message.[5] And then Mariah responded, with a clip of her singing “Violent.”[6]

Violent is the third track from the album that consist of 11 total songs. Clarissa Dane is the lead vocalist of the song and Mariah provided backing vocals.

Lyrics[]

We used to be like Shaggy & Scooby
But now you act like you never know me, yeah
We used to be like Carole & Paula, ooh
But now we only stumble and falter, yeah

I get
Violent waiting for you
Violent waiting for you
Violent waiting for you
Violent waiting for you

We used to be to like Chachi & Joanie
And now you act like a fuckin’ phoney, oh
We used to be to like Marilyn & Joe, oh
But now you act like someone I don’t know

I get
Violent waiting for you
Violent waiting for you
I get
Violеnt waiting for you
Violent waiting for you

I get so violent
I gеt so violent
I get so
I get so maniacal

I get violent, violent
Violent, violent

I want to spend your money
I want to kick somebody
I get violent, violent
Violent, violent

I get violent waiting for you
Violent waiting for you
