"Type Dangerous" is a song by American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey, released as the lead single from her sixteenth studio album, Here for It All, on June 6, 2025 through Gamma.
Background and release[]
On June 2, 2025, Carey posted a video on social media teasing the album. The video features Carey getting in a car with a license plate that reads "MC16," while a muffled version of "It's Like That" plays in the background, which Carey skips, and "Type Dangerous" is then heard playing. The video ends on a black screen with "What's your type?" on white text.[3] The next day, a second teaser was released. This time, Carey, in the same car, applies lip gloss and drives away, all while a muffled version of "Type Dangerous" plays. The teaser ends with the words "FRIDAY June 6," again in white text on a black background.[4] A few hours later, Carey posted a picture of her laying against the car while sporting a tank top with the words "TYPE: DANGEROUS" written on it in red glitter.[5] That same day, two "Type Dangerous" merch items were made available for purchase on Carey's Amazon Store: a T-shirt with the same design as the one on Carey's picture and a black trucker hat.[6] A third teaser was posted on June 4, 2024, which features Carey driving and posing with the car while lipsyncing to the song. Carey also unlocked the pre-save link and unveiled a placeholder artwork for the song.[7] The song's cover art was revealed on June 5, 2025.[8][9]
The song impacted US Pop Radio on June 10, 2025.[10]
A four-track EP with remixes featuring Busta Rhymes, Redman, Method Man, Big Sean, DJ Snake and Luísa Sonza was released on July 11, 2025.[11]
Composition[]
"Type Dangerous" was written by Carey, Anderson .Paak, Rae Khalil, Daniel Moore II, Jairus Mozee and Jason Pounds and produced by Carey, N.W.I. and Moore. It samples "Eric B. Is President" by Eric B. & Rakim, granting songwriting credits to both Eric Barrier and William Griffin. The song is set in the key of F♯ minor and has a tempo of 96 bpm. The percussion-heavy track also features elements from R&B and new jack swing.
Promotion[]
The song made its radio premiere on Power 105.1 on June 6, 2025 at 6 a.m. ET and was played every other hour until 10 p.m. ET.[12] That same day, interviews where Carey discussed the song and her upcoming album with Big Boy, Ellen K, Ryan Seacrest and Sean Valentine, taped on May 28, 2025, were broadcast on Real 9.23 LA, KOST 103.5, On Air with Ryan Seacrest and 104.3 MYfm, respectively.[13][14][15][16] On June 20, 2025, Carey was interviewed about the song by Poet Taylor and Joshua "Bru" Brubaker on Audacy's Audacy Check In.[17]
Lyric video[]
A lyric video for "Type Dangerous" was released simultaneously with the song. It features the lyrics over looped teaser footage.
Music video[]
Team Mariah confirmed on X that the multiple teasers were not related to a potential music video.[18] During the interview with Big Boy, Carey mentioned the song's official music video would show what kind of dangerous types she likes.[19] On June 9, 2025, Carey announced on social media that the video was scheduled to be released on June 13, 2025,[20] though it was delayed a day for editing purposes, and released on June 14, 2025 instead.
Directed by Joseph Kahn, the video begins with Carey arriving at an undisclosed location and posing for photographs. The main storyline is then divided into seven acts:
- Act 1, titled "Mr. Player," features Carey and her entourage entering a casino. Carey is approached by a man with a dagger, whom she blinds with her diamond ring.
- Act 2, "Mr. Dancer," sees Carey still in the casino, albeit now empty, surrounded by six dancers. A seventh dancer appears, only to be tied up by Carey for "blocking her light."
- Act 3, "Mr. Traitor," has Carey stepping on the hands of a man hanging from a rooftop. The man loses his grip and falls onto the street, segueing into the next act.
- Act 4, "Mr. Racer," comprises a futuristic drag race divided into two parts. The first part features a motorcycle chase led by Carey against streamer Marlon. A tanker truck cuts them off, but they escape unharmed. In the second part of the race, Carey is now in a supercar, and two other motorcycles appear to annihilate Marlon. Carey parks the car and tells a different man he's "too fast" before making him disappear with her car key.
- Act 5, "Mr. Dealer," takes place in a vault, where Carey is with a man who is immediately arrested by police officers.
- Act 6, "Ms. Danger," returns to the casino, where Carey and several men are lying on the floor. The men appear to be passing out as Carey sings.
- Act 7 sees YouTuber Mr. Beast meeting Carey on the rooftop of the Bianca Industries building. Carey proclaims she "doesn't know him," and he immediately disappears into a flurry of dollar bills.
The video also featured two Faraday Future luxury electronic vehicles, the FF91 2.0 and the FFZERO1 concept car.[21]
"Type Dangerous" won Best R&B at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.
Live performances[]
The song was debuted live at the 2025 BET Awards on June 9, 2025.[22] The performance featured Paak on the drums and a surprise appearance by Rakim. Carey finished the performance with a snippet of "It's Like That."[23] "Type Dangerous" was also included in Carey's set at Capital's Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium on June 15, 2025.[24] Carey also opened her sets at Brighton Pride, Heritage Live and The Town on August 2, 2025, August 15, 2025 and September 13, 2025, respectively, with the song. "Type Dangerous" was mashed with "It's Like That" during Carey's performance at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. The performance also featured elements from "Breakdown." The song performed the song at Amazônia Live - Hoje e Sempre on September 17, 2025 and at the iHeartRadio Music Festival on September 20, 2025. Carey opened the second Asian leg of The Celebration of Mimi in 2025 with "Type Dangerous."
