Thomas Daniel Mottola (born July 14, 1948) is an American businessman, record executive, television producer, theater producer, film producer, investor, and entertainment manager. He previously served as the Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, parent of the Columbia label, for nearly 15 years. He was married to Mariah Carey from 1993-1998.

Relationship with Mariah Carey[]

Tommy Mottola first encountered Mariah Carey in December 1988 at a CBS Records party in Manhattan, where Carey's friend and singer, Brenda K. Starr, handed him Carey's demo tape.[1] Intrigued by the material, Mottola played the tape in his limousine while leaving the event. Impressed by Carey's voice, he immediately turned the car around to search for her, but she had already departed. After an extensive two-week search, Mottola tracked Carey down and signed her to Columbia Records, enlisting top producers to craft her self-titled debut album, which became a success upon its 1990 release.[2]

Their professional relationship soon evolved into a romantic one, with Mottola and Carey beginning to date while she recorded her debut.[3] Despite a 21-year age difference, the couple announced their engagement in late 1992. They married on June 5, 1993, in a lavish half-million-dollar ceremony at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in New York City, attended by 300 guests including celebrities like Barbra Streisand, Robert De Niro, and Bruce Springsteen.[4] Carey's wedding dress, designed by Vera Wang and inspired by Princess Diana's, cost $25,000 and featured a 27-foot train.[5] The event was described as fairy-tale-like, but tensions simmered beneath the surface.

During their marriage, the couple resided in a sprawling 51-acre estate in Bedford, New York, a custom-built mansion that Carey later dubbed "Sing Sing" after the infamous maximum-security prison, symbolizing her feelings of entrapment and isolation.[6] In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Carey detailed allegations of Mottola's controlling behavior, including constant surveillance, restrictions on her movements, and attempts to dictate her artistic direction.[7][8] She claimed he forced her to dress conservatively and stifled her desire to incorporate more R&B and hip-hop elements into her music, preferring a more pop-oriented image.[9][10] One particularly incident described in the memoir occurred during a 1990s dinner party with music executives, where Mottola allegedly picked up a butter knife and slowly dragged the flat side across Carey's cheek to intimidate and humiliate her in front of others.[11][12][13][14] Carey wrote that this act left her feeling terrified and reinforced her sense of being in a coercive, abusive dynamic.[15] Another incident occurred in 1996 when Carey recorded a remix of "Always Be My Baby" with producer Jermaine Dupri and rapper Da Brat in the mansion's private recording studio. On a whim, she and Da Brat drove to a nearby Burger King. Mottola allegedly went "berserk," calling out an armed search party to locate them. As they sat in the car eating, Da Brat turned to Carey and said: "This ain't right. You done sold millions of records, girl. You live in a damn palace. You have everything, but if you can't be free to go to Burger King when you want, you ain't got nothing. You need to get out of there."[10]

Creative differences exacerbated their marital issues, with Carey feeling professionally and personally confined. They separated in December 1996, publicly announcing it on May 30, 1997. The divorce was finalized on March 4, 1998, after which they sold the Bedford mansion to investor Nelson Peltz for $20.5 million; the property later burned down in 1999. Post-divorce, Carey left Columbia Records to distance herself from Mottola's influence, signing with Virgin Records in a landmark $100 million deal.[16] In her 1999 album Rainbow, the track "Petals" subtly addressed their marriage, referring to Mottola as "Valentine," a nod to his early stage name T.D. Valentine.[17]

Their post-divorce relationship has been marked by occasional public interactions and lingering tensions. In 2005, at the 20th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in New York City, Carey encountered Mottola and his third wife, Thalía, leading to an "awkward moment" where they shook hands and exchanged pleasantries, though sources described the atmosphere as tense.[18][19][20][21][22][23][24] Mottola, in his 2013 memoir Hitmaker: The Man and His Music, reflected on their union as "absolutely wrong and inappropriate," acknowledging the power imbalance due to his position as her boss.[25][26][27] In recent years, Carey has rarely mentioned Mottola by name, often referring to him vaguely as "someone she doesn't know" or using humor as a coping mechanism for residual anger.[28][29][30] In a 2025 interview, she admitted to still feeling "sometimes angry" about the marriage but emphasized using wit to process those emotions.[31]
