"Through the Rain" is the lead single and first track from Mariah Carey's ninth studio album, Charmbracelet. Written by Carey & Lionel Cole and produced by the former alongside Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and James "Big Jim" Wright, the song was released through Island Def Jam Records and Carey's own imprint, MonarC Enterainment, on October 5, 2002 to radio, followed by commercial releases around the world in multiple formats, such as CD, cassette and maxi-singles, as well as vinyls and digital downloads.
The song peaked at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100,[1] becoming Carey's lowest charting lead single until 2018's "With You". Despite its weak performance on the Hot 100, "Through the Rain" managed to peak at #1 on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart due to remixes by Full Intention, Maurice Joshua and Hex Hector and Mac Quayle.[2] Additionally, the Hex Hector/Mac Quayle remix also topped Billboard's Dance Singles Sales chart[3] and peaked at #2 on the Dance Singles Sales 2003 year-end chart.[4] The song achieved higher placements internationally, reaching the #1 spot in Spain[5] and peaking within the top 10 in Canada,[6] Italy,[7] the Netherlands,[8] Portugal,[9] Sweden,[10] Switzerland[11] and the UK.[12]
The song was certified Gold in Canada, denoting shipments of over 50,000 units.[13]
Background and release[]
In 2000, after parting from Columbia Records, Carey signed a record-breaking $100 million five-album recording contract with Virgin Records America (EMI Records).[14] She often stated that Columbia had regarded her as a commodity, with her separation from Tommy Mottola exacerbating her relations with label executives.[15] However, in July 2001, Carey had suffered a physical and emotional breakdown.[15] Due to this situation, Virgin and 20th Century Fox delayed the release of Carey's film Glitter, as well as its soundtrack of the same name.[16] Both releases received negative feedback and were commercially unsuccessful.[17] This also resulted in her deal with Virgin being bought out for $50 million.[14][18] Soon after, Carey flew to Capri, Italy for a period of five months, in which she began writing material for her new album, stemming from all the personal experiences she had endured throughout the past year.[19] Carey later said that her time at Virgin was "a complete and total stress-fest [...] I made a total snap decision which was based on money and I never make decisions based on money. I learned a big lesson from that."[20] Later that year, she signed a contract with Island Records, valued at more than $24 million,[21] and launched the record label MonarC. To add further to Carey's emotional burdens, her father, with whom she had little contact since childhood, died of cancer that year.[22]
Throughout the first years of her career, Carey's musical styles mainly involved pop influenced R&B. Additionally, her image was of a reserved and modestly dressed female, or as Carey's later described it "the 90s version of Mary Poppins". As the 1990s wore on, Carey began featuring rappers on remixes, and began infusing hip-hop into her musical palette. As her music changed, so did her image, which became more sexual, and aimed at younger audiences than the more contemporary appeal of her earlier works. "Through the Rain" was used not only as a vehicle for listeners to become more in-tune with Carey's personal struggles, but also as a means to "re-capture" her audience throughout the earlier stages of her career. In an interview with MTV News, the song's co-producer Jimmy Jam described why Carey chose to release it as the lead single: "I think 'Through the Rain' is a great way to start the record, because it is emotional and it kind of speaks directly to the questions people might have about the last year of her life. It's a good idea to get that out of the way and move on to happy, less emotional songs."
The song was initially released in the United States to contemporary hit radio, adult contemporary radio and hot AC radio on September 30, 2002,[23] and to rhythmic contemporary radio, UAC radio and urban radio on October 14, 2002.[24] On November 11, 2002, "Through the Rain" CD and cassette singles were released commercially for the first time in Australia[25] and in Europe,[26] and on November 18, 2002, the song was released in the UK.[27][28] An US CD single release was planned for November 19, 2002,[29] but due to the song's weak airplay, it was cancelled at the last minute[30] and a 6-track EP entitled MC... Move the Crowd was released to promote "Boy (I Need You)", "Irresitible (West Side Connection)" and "You Got Me" instead.[31] A double vinyl maxi-single with dance remixes was eventually made available in the US on December 10, 2002.[31]
On November 21, 2002, it was officially announced on Carey's website that she had embarked on an "innovative online campaign" in support of Charmbracelet, with "Through the Rain" becoming available to consumers as a digital download on the same day for 99¢ via all Liquid Audio affiliated sites. Additionally the track was also offered through two online subscription services, Pressplay and Rhapsody.[32]
Due to overwhelming demand following Carey's performance at the 30th American Music Awards, a CD single for "Through the Rain" was finally released in the US on February 4, 2003.[33] It included the original version of the song, as well as the Hex Hector/Mac Quayle Radio Edit and a live edit of "Bringin' On the Heartbreak".
Critical reception[]
"Through the Rain" received positive reviews from music critics; many complimented Carey's restrained vocal performance, as well as the song's simple instrumental accompaniment, while others criticized it for being overly-dramatic. Jon Pareles of The New York Times described it as "inspirational", and felt that due to its vagueness, the song is would be applicable to all listeners, not just Carey.[34] The Daily Union's David Germain commented how the song's simple musical arrangement and Carey's "restrained" vocal delivery aided it in becoming "modest and reserved".[35] Writing for Billboard, Michael Paoletta chose "Through the Rain" as a top pick from the album,[36] as did Allmusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine.[37] He described it as a song that was designed as "'Vision of Love' meets 'Hero'", and wrote, "Mariah is back in the adult contemporary camp, no longer trying to prove that she's real."[37] Cara DiPasquale from the Chicago Tribune called it a "powerhouse ballad",[38] while Entertainment Weekly's Tom Sinclair wrote "embellished with her trademark vocal pyrotechnics, it is one of those highly personal songs about finding your way out of an emotional wilderness, but it sinks in its own sodden sentimentality".[39] Similarly, a writer from Newsday also described "Through the Rain" as a "powerhouse ballad", and felt it was reminiscent of Carey's previous single "One Sweet Day" (1995).[40] Writing for the Los Angeles Times, Randy Lewis noted how the song was able to effectively take listeners right into Carey's personal struggles from the previous year.[41] Tina Brown from Newsweek felt that while Carey's personal troubles may not have been fully solved, the song made her appear "strong and triumphant".[42] Bob Waliszewski of Plugged In noted that "Through the Rain" "encourages listeners to weather life's storms with the help of faith, prayer and perseverance".[43]
Cover art[]
Before the song saw any sort of commercial release, promotional CD singles were distributed around the world. Most promotional releases had the same cover art, which features a white background with four rain droplets splattered against it. Carey's name and butterfly logo used from 2002-2014 are displayed in baby blue, while the song's title in black. Different variations of this cover art, with multiple butterfly logos either in olive green or blue replacing the four rain droplets, were used to promote both the song's remixes and radio edits, respectively.
For the song's main cover art, a picture of Carey from the Charmbracelet album photo shoot in Capri was used. Carey appears to be tilting her head at the camera while leaning on a white wall covered in green ivy. Carey is seen wearing a salmon sheer dress, as well as a charm bracelet on her wrist, an allusion to the title of the album, with several charms, such as a four-leaf clover, a reference to her Irish heritage; a dolphin, possibly referencing her ability to hit notes in the 6th and 7th octaves; a heart, which could be a reference to the love songs Carey has been known for since the beginning of her career; a Christian cross, a possible reference to her faith in God or the lyrics for "Through the Rain" or any previous song with a similar theme; and a lamb, a direct reference to her fans, dubbed the Lambily. Carey's name appears in white, while the words "Through the Rain" appear directly under it, in a light shade of champagne beige and in lowercase, slightly moved to the right. A tilted version of Carey's butterfly logo appears next to the song title in gold. A zoomed-in version of this cover was exclusive to the UK CD single of the song. This cover art was reused on 2021's Through the Rain EP, albeit with a new champagne beige #MC30 border.
An alternate version of the cover art was used on the second version of the international maxi-single, on the European cassette single and on the UK enhanced CD single . This time, a different, zoomed-in picture of Carey from the same photo shoot, where she is not tilting her head, was used. The text appears displayed in the same way as the previous artwork, however, the words "Through the Rain" now appear in gold instead of champagne beige.
Music video[]
Background[]
The music video, directed by Dave Meyers, was set in the late 1960s and was filmed on location in New York City on September 30 and October 1, 2002. It features a past and present story-line loosely based on Carey's parents, Alfred and Patrica Carey, played by J.D. Williams and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, respectively, during the times that she was conceived, and incorporates themes from Charmbracelet as well as from Carey's life. In an interview with MTV News, Carey said that originally, the plot for the video wasn't going to have anything to do with her parents' past experiences with racism, but was changed a few days before shooting began. During the interview, she described how to plot came into reality:
"Originally it wasn't going to have anything to do with that, but people were looking through my photo albums this year. My father and I had made some photo albums together of his relatives and different people in the family. A couple people saw [the albums] and they were like, 'This is amazing that you have this.' I guess everybody was like, 'How would you feel about this type of concept [for a video]?' So I guess I thought if someone's going to do it might as well be me. The story line [of the video] is about an interracial couple. It's sort of Romeo and Juliet but it's set in the '60s and they're kind of torn apart. It's about their struggle and I'm sort of the narrator. I don't want to give too much away about it, but it's nice. Something I could relate to, being the product of an interracial union, though [my parents] did not wind up happily ever after standing in church together."
Sigler, who was offered the role only days before filming commenced, said that she had always been a fan of Carey, and accepted the offer immediately. She described that the shoot was set in the 1960s, and that she played the singer's mother during and after her pregnancy. Sigler described the plot: "With my character, she's basically going against her parents' wishes to be with this gentleman. She's pregnant with a baby, which is Mariah, and they run away together. So it's kind of an epic love story, it's nice." Carey revealed that the video would incorporate a rainstorm scene in New York City. Carey jokingly explained how she originally did not intend to get wet, but felt it added a lot to the video.
An alternate cut of the video, restripped with the Maurice Joshua remix, aired exclusively on Australian music channels in late 2002.
Synopsis[]
The video begins with a view of a Carey's personal family album. As the pages open, the camera zooms to one particular photograph, of her young mother facing a wall, with her back turned. As the picture comes into full view, it turns into actual footage. Her mother turns around in anguish, as her own mother begins shouting at her and calling her a disgrace to the family. This is due to the fact that she is pregnant with the child of a black man, with whom she wants to move out with. As she goes to leave the home, her mother grabs her arm and rips off a "charmbracelet" from her wrist. As she picks it up off the floor, she tells her mother she hates her and leaves in a taxi. From the clothing and scenery, it is notable that the scenes depicted are happening in the late 1960s, prior to Carey's birth. As the song starts playing, the video focuses on Carey, walking down the street in New York City. As she continues singing and walking down the street, the camera aims to the sky, which is darkened with cloud while light starts to peer through.
While rain starts to fall, and people start to clear the streets, Carey remains walking on the pathway. The girl now reaches her destination, and is welcomed into the home of her lover. They soon board a bus, and travel to a new home where they will live together. As they are about to enter the bus, the girl's mother is seen screaming in tears for her daughter to return to her. She hesitates, and then continues with her lover onto the transport. The scene once again focuses on Carey, who is standing in the midst of a torrential downpour, singing to the heavens. As she reaches the song's climax, Carey, now dry and dressed in a long black gown, is shown singing at the altar of a church. As she sings at the church, scenes of the girl lighting a candle, and her lover laying together with her on a bed are shown, before focusing back on Carey. She stares at an elderly couple in the first row at the church, an inter-racial couple now revealed to be her parents, and smiles while wearing her mother's charmbracelet. The elderly woman begins crying, as her husband holds her hand as they intently stare at Carey. Their faces rejuvenate to show them as a young couple, as their photo is taken and placed into the family album from the beginning of the video.
Live performances[]
Following its release, Carey debuted the song, as well as other tracks from Charmbracelet, on the one-hour special, Mariah Carey: Shining Through the Rain, taped on October 15, 2002 and aired on December 3, 2002 on MTV, three days prior to the album's stateside release, in which Carey was interviewed and addressed rumors of her breakdown and its cause, as well as of the album and its inspiration, followed by a Q&A with fans. Carey also embarked on an European promotional tour for the album, where she sang the song on the following TV shows:

- Star Acedemy in France on November 16, 2002. Carey also aided the show's cast in singing a medley of her previous hits.
On November 21, 2002, Carey performed "Through the Rain" and "My Saving Grace" on The Oprah Winfrey Show, which aired on December 3, 2002, and, shortly after, embarked on yet another promotional tour, this time in Asia, where she promoted the song on several interviews and performed it live on Music Station on November 29, 2002. Promotion for Charmbracelet saw Carey's return to Brazil, where she sang "Through the Rain" and "I Only Wanted", as well as "Heartbreaker" on Show da Virada, taped on December 3, 2002 and aired on New Year's Eve ("Through the Rain" only), and "My All" on Fantástico, on December 4, 2002. Carey performed the song live on December 7, 2002 in front of a crowd of 50,000 people, at the closing concert of the Mexican Teletón, which took place in the country's Azteca Stadium. Announced as the concert's "star", she performed in a black dress. It was also part of the setlist for Carey's Today Show mini concert at Mall of America in Bloomington, MN on December 11, 2002, for a crowd of over 10,000. Carey performed the song, as well as "All I Want for Christmas Is You", at several Top 50 radio holiday concerts, including the Y-100 Jingle Ball on December 15, 2002, 92-PRO FM's Jingle Mingle on December 17, 2002 and the KIIS-FIM Jingle Ball on December 19, 2002.
One month later, Carey was featured as one of the headlining performers at the 30th annual American Music Awards, held on January 13, 2003. Introduced by Sharon Osbourne, Carey performed "Through the Rain" alongside a complete live gospel choir, and wore a long black evening gown. During the recital, images of newspaper headlines describing Carey's breakdown were projected on a large curtain behind her, with one reading "When you fall down, you get back up". Following the song's completion, Carey received a standing ovation. On January 15, 2003, Carey taped the 30-minute special, MTV Presents Mariah Carey, which aired on MTV Base in March 2003 and included a performance of "Through the Rain" among other songs from Charmbracelet. The song was also performed on January 16, 2003, at the NRJ Radio Awards in Stockholm, Sweden, on the French TV show La legende des voix on January 17, 2003, and at the 5th annual NRJ Music Awards in Cannes, France on January 18, 2003. Carey also performed the song, as well as a rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner", at the Daytona 500 Pre-Race Ceremony at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL, on February 16, 2003.
Towards the end of March, Charmbracelet saw release throughout Europe, prompting Carey to appear on several programs in promotion of the album, including V Graham Norton, where she performed the song, as well as "Boy (I Need You)", her single at the time.
"Through the Rain" was a regular on the Charmbracelet World Tour setlist, being performed on every date. During most of the song, Carey performed it while sitting on a large sofa, before standing for the climax.
While the song hasn't been performed in full since 2004, Carey performed an a cappella snippet of the song in 2018, on the Magelang date of Mariah Carey: Live in Concert, and two other snippets in 2019: on the Parisian date of the Caution World Tour, as well as on Carey's concert at the Festival d'été de Québec on July 11, 2019.
Due to Charmbracelet peaking at #1 on the US iTunes chart as the result of a fan-driven movement entitled "#JusticeForCharmbracelet" during the COVID-19 pandemic, the song was paired with "Make It Happen" and made into a medley for Carey's performance at the virtual hour-long telethon, Rise Up New York!, organized by the Robin Hood Foundation and iHeartMedia on May 11, 2020.

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
When you get caught in the rain
With nowhere to run
When you're distraught
And in pain without anyone
When you keep crying out to be saved
But nobody comes
And you feel so far away
That you just can't find your way home
You can get there alone, it's ok
Once you say
[Chorus]
I can make it through the rain
I can stand up once again
On my own and I know
That I'm strong enough to mend
And everytime I feel afraid
I hold tighter to my faith
And I live one more day
And I make it through the rain
[Verse 2]
And if you keep falling down
Don't you dare give in
You will arise safe and sound
So keep pressing on steadfastly
And you'll find what you need to prevail
Once you say
[Chorus]
I can make it through the rain
I can stand up once again
On my own and I know
That I'm strong enough to mend
And everytime I feel afraid
I hold tighter to my faith
And I live one more day
And I make it through the rain
[Bridge]
And when the wind blows
And shadows grow close
Don't be afraid
There's nothing you can't face
And should they tell you
You'll never pull through
Don't hesitate
Stand tall and say
[Chorus]
I can make it through the rain
I can stand up once again
On my own and I know
That I'm strong enough to mend
And everytime I feel afraid
I hold tighter to my faith
And I live one more day
And I make it through the rain
[Post-Chorus]
I can make it through the rain
And stand up once again
And I'll live one more day, and I
I can make it through the rain
[Outro]
Oh yes you can
You're gonna make it through the
Rain

You're gonna make it through the
Rain
[Intro: Joe]
Gotta stand up again
And just say the rain ain't gonna melt me away
[Verse 1: Mariah Carey]
When you get caught
In the pouring rain
With nowhere to run
Without anyone and you
Get a little bit frightened
'Cause you've lost your way home
But through all the thunder and lightening
Just keep praying and keep (yes I can, yes I can)
Saying to yourself
[Chorus: Mariah Carey & Kelly Price, Mariah Carey, *Joe* & Mariah Carey & Joe]
I'll make it through the rain
I'll stand up once again (I'll stand again)
On my own (on my own) and I know (and I know)
That I'm strong and in time
I can mend (yeah)
When I'm afraid
I hold tighter to my faith
Live another day longer
And I'll make it through the rain *(make it through the rain)*
[Verse 2: Mariah Carey, Kelly Price & *Mariah Carey, Kelly Price & Joe*]
And if you keep, keep on falling down (falling down)
Don't you dare give in (no no no)
You will arise safe and sound
If you keep *pressing on, steadfastly*
You'll have everything you need
Believe you will prevail (yes I can, yes I can)
If you just say
[Chorus: Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey & Kelly Price, *Joe*, Mariah Carey & Joe & **Kelly Price**]
I'll make it through the rain
I'm gonna make it
I'll stand up once again
On my own and I know *(own)*
That I'm strong and in time
I can mend
When I'm afraid (whenever I'm afraid)
I hold tighter to my faith
Live another day longer
And I'll make it through the rain
Oh-oh-oh
[Bridge: Mariah Carey, (Mariah Carey & Kelly Price), Joe & Kelly Price]
(There are times in your life)
(When you feel like you can't)
(Keep going)
But keep holding, *keep holding*, keep holding
Keep holding (On)
There are times in your life when you
Feel like the world all around you
Has shattered, but know that you can't be broken
That you can't be broken
Don't be afraid don't be afraid, don't be afraid, stand tall and say
Yes I can, yes I can
[Chorus: Mariah Carey & Kelly Price]
(I'm gonna make it)
I'll make it through the rain
(I'm gonna stand up again on my own)
I'll stand up once again
On my own and I know
('Cause I know) That I'm strong and in time
I can mend (I can mend)
When I'm afraid
I hold tighter to my faith (And I live another day)
Live another day longer
And I make it through the rain
[Chorus: Mariah Carey]
Yes I can, yes I can
I'll make it through the rain
(Make it through the rain)
I'll stand up once again
('Cause I'm on my own and)
On my own and I know
(Now I know that)
That I'm strong and in time
(I'm strong, I'm strong and I)
I can mend
When I'm afraid
(Whenever I feel afraid)
I hold tighter to my faith
(Tighter to my faith)
Live another day longer
And I make it through the rain
(Make it through the rain)
[Chorus: Mariah Carey]
Yes I can, yes I can
I'll make it through the rain
I'll stand up once again
On my own and I know
That I'm strong and in time
I can mend
When I'm afraid
I hold tighter to my faith
Live another day longer
And I make it through the rain
[Outro: Mariah Carey]
The rain don't bother me
