The Live Debut - 1990 is a digital extended play that was released on July 17, 2020. The EP was released under Columbia Records and included live performances from Mariah's debut showcase at New York City's Tatou Club on October 22, 1990.[2] [3]
This is the first of many EPs released for the #MC30 celebration commemorating the 30th year since Mariah's debut.[4] Other releases include The Rarities, a compilation of previously-unreleased songs, as well as six other EP's and The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the first memoir written by the singer, both of which were released in 2020.
Background[]
Mariah Carey's self-titled debut album turned 30 on Friday June 12, 2020. On this date, Mariah announced that she's putting off the MC30 celebration in light of the nationwide fight for racial justice.[5] On July 15, 2020, Mariah's posted a video montage of images and videos from her the era of her debut album, which arrived June 12, 1990 and went on to sell more than 15 million copies worldwide. "MC30 Every Friday," she captioned the image. On July 17, 2020, The Live Debut was released digitally to several streaming platforms.[6] Footage from the showcase was also released to Youtube.[7]
Mariah also revealed on twitter that the olive green crushed velvet ensemble (which she wore during the showcase) was not her choice.[8]
Analysis[]
This EP included 5 tracks. The first track was an introduction of Mariah by a male annoncer.[9] Three of the tracks: Love Takes Time, Vision of Love and Vanishing were from Mariah's debut album. One of the tracks was a cover of Aretha Franklin's song "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)."
Mariah performed the song "Someday" at Tatou Club but the performance was not included on the EP.[10] Many speculate that it was because the performance had issues mainly with Mariah's timing and the band.[11]

The Live Debut - 1990 debuted at #50 on the Main US iTunes Chart and #3 on the Mexican iTunes Charts.[12] Currently, the EP has peaked at #2 spot on the Worldwide iTunes Album charts.[13]
