Background[]
Mariah originally planned on including "Slipping Away" on her 1995 album “Daydream”, however, it did not make the final cut. Speculation as to why the track was not included on the album has been a popular topic amongst fans, with some claiming that Columbia Records CEO, Tommy Mottola, axed the song as it was too “urban” for the overall album and would possibly change Carey’s girl-next-door image, whereas others speculate that Mottola removed the song due to its obvious allusions to his disintegrating marriage to Carey.[1] Mariah has recently confirmed that the label didn't let her include it on the album because "it was too R&B."[source?]
Live performances[]
Mariah has never performed "Slipping Away" in its entirety. However, she has performed snippets of the song periodically. In 2000, she performed a snippet of the song during the Chicago date of the Rainbow World Tour.[2] During Caution Era, Mariah performed the song backstage with her background singers. She also performed a snippet of the song during the Paris and London dates of the Caution World Tour.[3] In February 2020, Mariah performed a snippet of the song at her The Butterfly Returns concert.[4]
