Song's Meaning[]
The song "Prom Queen" tells the story of a person who desires to be accepted as their true self. The lyrics describe their struggle to fit in and their journey towards self-discovery and self-acceptance. The person wishes to be seen and accepted for who they are, and dreams of becoming the prom queen. They try to hide their true self by living a double life and pretending to be cool, but eventually, they start to embrace their identity. They experiment with makeup, clothes, and even hormones to feel more comfortable in their own skin. The lyrics suggest that the person has found a community that accepts and supports them, as they are referred to as "she" towards the end of the song. The chorus emphasizes the person's determination to be whoever they want to be and to show the world that they can be the prom queen, symbolizing their desire to be seen as a valid and worthy member of their community.
Lyrics[]
I can be anything
I'll show them all
I can be anything
I'll show them all
[Verse 1]
On the day he turned 16
He washed his face and brushed his teeth
Looked in the mirror longingly
Said "I could be the next prom queen"
He closed the door and went to school
And tried to act so very cool
Living a double life
Isn’t so very nice
Sometimes he isn’t sure
If he’s a boy or girl
[Verse 2]
Got home at quarter after three
He opened up the vanity
Applied his makeup expertly
And said, “I could pass for 23”
Hе stole his little sister's drеss
And used his brother's socks as breasts
He shaved his legs and moussed his hair
Put on his mother's underwear
[Chorus]
I can be anything that I want to be
Someday I will really show them all
I can be anything that I want to be
Someday I will really show them all
[Verse 3]
On the day he turned 19
He took a train to Bleeker Street
He met a guy named Norma Jean
Who said he could fulfill his dream
He told the doctor of his woes
And took the bottle of hormones
Struck collagen into his lips
And silicone into his hips
He didn't even cry
Under the surgeon's knife
Now he can tell the world
That she's a real girl
[Chorus]
I can be anything that I wanna be
Someday I will really show them all
I can be anything that I wanna be
Someday I will really show them all
I can be anything that I wanna be
Someday I will really show them all (Someday I will really show them all)
That I can be prom queen (prom queen)
I can be prom queen (prom queen)
I can be prom queen (prom queen)
I can be prom queen (prom queen)
I can be prom queen
