On July 27, 1993, Mariah released the first single "Dreamlover" from her album Music Box. The release of this song marked the beginning of the Music Box Era. Mariah's performance at Top of the Pops in 1994 marked the end of Music Box Era.
The Album and Era[]
The album Music Box was a huge hit as it peaked at #1 and sold 505K copies in one week. It also remained on the Billboard Top 200 for 128 Weeks. The album also sold over 10 million copies in the United States alone despite being rated poorly by critics. During this era, Mariah had her first touring experience. Mariah had avoided touring until she embarked on the North American Music Box Tour in 1993. This tour allowed Mariah to go across the states and visit her fans which meant she could build the super close relationship she has with them today. Additionally, it also gave her an experience of the touring life allowing her to get over stage fright and the nervousness which along with nodules had affected her vocals. By the end of the tour, Mariah received much better reviews and was willing to tour more. There were signs that Mariah was sick during the Music Box Tour, but this meant Mariah could work on her improvisation skills as she worked out ways to sound great.
The release of "Music Box" heightened Mariah's worldwide recognition especially because she covered the song "Without You" which became #1 all over the world, especially in Europe. This made Mariah even more of a household name as she appeared on many shows, especially internationally.
During this era, Mariah was able to do her first collaboration on "Endless Love" with Luther Vandross.

Arguably, many fans consider this era as being the best when it comes to Mariah's technique. This had to do with the resonance, belts and whistles in Mariah's live performances.
