Mariah Carey - Live in São Paulo was a one-off concert by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, held at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil on September 20, 2024.
Background[]
Following the announcement of Carey as a headliner of the 2024 edition of the Rock in Rio music festival, a second show in Brazil was first teased on May 20, 2024 by Brazilian entertainment journalist José Norberto Flesch via X.[1] On May 26, 2024, a video montage of Brazilian fans reacting to an anonymous voice message recorded by Carey teasing the concert was posted on social media by event organizer 30e.[2] The following day, Banco Santander Brasil, the Brazilian subsidiary of the Spanish Santander Group and the show's sponsor, posted four pictures consisting of:
- a glass inside an ice cube with a butterfly sitting on it
- the same glass, but with the ice now melted and the butterfly fluttering near
- the same glass, now broken, and the butterfly flying away from the scene
- the words "it's time!" in white against a black background[3]
Banco Santander Brasil also posted a video of Farol Santander, an emblematic skyscraper in São Paulo, inundated with butterflies, followed by "it's tiiiiiime!" written in the sky with chrome lettering.
On May 28, 2024, Allianz Parque, the venue where the show's taking place, posted a video of the stadium swarmed by butterflies with a muffled version of "Fantasy" playing in the background, captioning it with "Hoje 👀" (meaning "today"), hinting at the imminent announcement of the show.[4] A few hours later, Carey and event organizer 30e officially announced the show with a joint Instagram post.[5] The Santander cardmember presale for the concert began on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at 10 a.m., while the general sale started on June 6, 2024, at 12 p.m. on the Eventim website and at 1 p.m. on the official ticket office.
On September 8, 2024, Carey posted a video on Instagram of her and Daniel Moore II rehearsing a new intro for "It's Like That" and stated in the caption that she "[couldn't] wait to see [her] fans in China & Brazil."[6] That same day, Carey took to X to post a video of both of them rehearsing "I Wish You Knew," albeit in a lower key, also dedicated to her Chinese and Brazilian fans.[7]
