Loverboy (Firecracker Original Version) is the ninth track of Mariah's eight compilation album, The Rarities.
The song was written by Mariah Carey and Martin Denny and was released on October 2, 2020 through Columbia and Legacy Records.
Background[]
While working on the movie Glitter, Mariah crafted a concept for the song "Loverboy." Her idea was to sample the melody and hook from the 1978 Yellow Magic Orchestra song "Firecracker", using an interpolation of it throughout the chorus and introduction[1]. Soon after Mariah's contract with Columbia Records ended in 2001, Jennifer Lopez was signed by Tommy Mottola, and had begun recording material for her album. According to sources Motolla had learned of Mariah's usage of the "Firecracker" sample and aimed to have Lopez use the sample before her. When the music publishers for "Firecracker" were questioned, they admitted Carey had licensed usage of the sample first, and Lopez's team had signed for it over one month later, under Motolla's arrangement.[1] Because Lopez's album came out in early 2001 while Glitter (soundtrack) came out towards the end of that year, Mariah was not able to use the original sample. Subsequently, Carey would use an alternate composition for "Loverboy" which included a new sample, "Candy" by Cameo.
On September 9, 2020 Mariah revealed the track-listing for compilation album, The Rarities.[2] On the album, "Loverboy (Firecracker Original Version)" was listed as the ninth track.
