“Just To Hold You Once Again” is the eight track recorded by Mariah Carey for her third studio album, Music Box . The song was written and produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff. It was released on August 31, 1993 through Columbia Records.

Critical reception[]

In his biography of Mariah, author Chris Nickson states: “Just to Hold You Once Again” was almost bound to suffer in comparison, and in truth it wasn’t Mariah’s strongest writing effort. It was, however, somewhat redeemed by the use of the backing vocals, whose natural soulful tinge bolstered and added to the tune.[1]

He also states: Lyrically, “Just to Hold You Once Again” was a despairing, confused tale, the singer still wondering why the breakup had happened, even as the love refused to leave her heart. It was only natural, with Mariah’s increasing stature as an artist, that she would want to create some thing that would last, and with dance music becoming dated so quickly, ballads

Nickson also referred to the song as the album's most fascinating song.[1]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]

Do you know
How it feels
Lying here without you, baby?
You could never understand what's happening to me
So alone
Nothing's real
I just dream about you, baby
And forever wonder why you had to break free
[Chorus]
Even though you're not my lover
Even though you're not my friend
I would give my all
To have you here
Just to hold you once again
[Verse 2]
It's so hard
To believe
I don't have you right beside me
As I long to touch you, but you're out of my reach
And my heart doesn't feel
It's so very cold inside of me
Just a shadow of someone that I used to be

[Chorus]
Oh, even though you're not my lover, baby
Even though you're not my friend
I would give my all
To have you here
Just to hold you once again

[Bridge]
You were the only one (Only one)
That I allowed inside my heart
Now I'm just holding on
To something so far gone
Oh, where did I go wrong?

[Chorus]
Even though you're not my lover, baby
And even though you're not my friend (Oh, no, no, no)
I would give my all
To have you here
Just to hold you once again

Just to hold you once again
