I Am Free is the sixth track from Mariah's fifth studio, Daydream. The song was released on October 3, 1995 through Columbia Records.
"I Am Free" was written and produced by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff.
Critical reception[]
In his book "Mariah Carey Revisited" author Chris Nickson stated the following about the song:
"From there, the album moved to the closest it would come to gospel, “I Am Free.” With Loris Holland on Hammond organ behind Walter’s keyboards and programming. Holland had helped out on Merry Christmas—the gospel feel was perfectly genuine and unforced, an indication that Mariah wasn’t abandoning her roots by any means. However, her writing and arranging were both becoming more sophisticated, as the lines of the chorus seemed to cascade into each other, something a less technically gifted vocalist would have had trouble singing, but which seemed just right coming from Mariah."[1]
Lyrics[]
Once, I was a prisoner
Lost inside myself
With the world surrounding me
Wandering through the misery
But now I am free
[Verse 2]
You gave me a breath of life
Unclouded my eyes
With a sweet serenity
Lighting a ray of hope for me
And now I am free
[Chorus]
Free to live
Free to laugh
Free to soar
Free to shine
Free to give
Free to love
Free enough to fly
[Bridge]
Once, I was all so alone
Unsteady and cold
But your love rained down upon me
Washing away uncertainty, yeah, yeah
[Outro]
But now
I am free
