“I've Been Thinking About You” is the ninth track recorded by Mariah Carey for her third studio album, “Music Box” . The song was written and produced by Mariah, Robert Clivillés and David Cole. It was released on August 31, 1993 through Columbia Records.
Critical reception[]
In his unauthorized biography about Mariah, author Chris Nickson states that the song was not "as strong as the dance tunes on Emotions, which may have been the ultimate reason neither song saw release as a single."[1]
He also states: As a song, “I’ve Been Thinking About You” probably stood as the most contemporary sounding piece Mariah had committed to tape. While much of this was due to the production (and largely the rhythm track, at that), a great deal of the arrangement ideas came from modern R&B, which in turn had taken its cues from hip-hop. So everything ended up very jerky, with no real flow, or rather the flow seemed interrupted. It was pleasant enough, but after the depth of the ballads that had preceded it, it sounded hollow, a shell without a center. One of the things that worked against it was its wordiness; merely fitting in the lines precluded the expression of emotion. How ironic, then, that out of this track Mariah would see a way ahead that would be expressed more and more over the next few years.[1]
