Background[]
In 1995 while working on her album Daydream, Mariah recorded a secret alternative rock album with her friend, Clarissa Dane. She would reportedly do her "alter-ego band sessions" after working on Daydream each night. She described her alter ego has being similar to Bianca Storm who appeared in the "Heartbreaker" music video. In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah expressed that recording songs for "Someone's Ugly Daughter" helped her cope with her anger.[3] It also helped Mariah get "through some dark days." Additionally, she also described the experience as "weirdly good" and "satirical."
"Freak" is the sixth track from the album that consist of 11 total songs. Clarissa Dane is the lead vocalist of the song and Mariah provided backing vocals.
Song's Lyrics[]
The song "Freak" celebrates the acceptance of people who are often marginalized by society. The lyrics describe encounters with individuals who may be seen as "freaks" due to their appearance or behavior, including a midget who hasn't bathed in eight weeks, a drag queen with a hairy chest, and a lady with a beard and pimples. Despite these unconventional characteristics, the singer considers them friends and likable people. The song's message is one of inclusivity and tolerance, suggesting that differences in appearance or behavior should not be used to judge or discriminate against others. The chorus reinforces this message, stating that bigotry is a form of insecurity and that everyone is deserving of respect and acceptance.
Lyrics[]
Met a midget he was shorter than Elroy Jetson
If you could see him it would really blow your mind
Smelled a little like the kennel that you keep your pets in
Because he didn’t bathe for eight weeks at a time
But he was my friend
I liked him, I really liked him
Something about him was cool
He was okay
I think that you would like him
He’s an awful lot like you
I met a drag queen
In a harlot hobo hellhole
She looked like a little bit like Gilda in a dress
He wore a teddy with a nicе big plunging neckline
So evеryone could see
Her big fat hairy chest
(Oh yeah, but) She was my friend
I liked him, I really liked her
Something about her was cool
She was okay
I think that you would like her
She’s an awful lot like you
It doesn’t matter who you are
Or what you think of me
Bigotry is just a form of insecurity
I met a lady with a beard like Rip Van Winkle
I don’t remember but I think her name was Bruce
You couldn’t see his face
She had so many pimples
I couldn’t tell if she was
Black, white or chartreuse
(Oh yeah, but) She was my friend
I liked her, I really liked her
Something about her was cool
She was okay
I think that you would like her
She’s an awful lot like you
She was my friend
I liked her, I really liked her
Something about her was cool
She was okay
I think that you would like her
She’s an awful lot like you
She’s an awful lot like you
She’s an awful lot like you
She’s an awful lot like you
