Alone in Love is the seventh track on Mariah Carey's self-titled debut studio album. It was released on June 12, 1990 through Columbia Records

Background[]

'Alone in Love" was written at Mariah's mother piano at what she describes as being the "shack." While recording demos in the studio, Mariah struck a deal in which she would sing demos for a guy if he let her work on her own. She then began learning how to experiment with her songs. She did dance tracks which all had different sounds. 'Alone in Love" was one of the first tracks on Mariah's demo. A version of the song eventually made it onto Mariah's debut album and she describes it as remaining one of her favorites.

Critical reception[]

"All in Your Mind" led into “Alone in Love,” a Rhett Lawrence-produced ballad. Other than the synthesized instrumentation, this seemed, like the previous track, almost out of place on a nineties record, having far more the feel of a timeless standard. That could actually be said for much of Mariah Carey; the basis of its music was not in contemporary fads and fashions, but rather the material looked backward for its inspiration, to soul, some jazz, and especially gospel. In that regard, its success definitely bucked the trend, and sent a hopeful song for the future.
