Background[]

In 1995 while working on her album Daydream, Mariah recorded a secret alternative rock album with her friend, Clarissa Dane. She would reportedly do her "alter-ego band sessions" after working on Daydream each night. She described her alter ego has being similar to Bianca Storm who appeared in the "Heartbreaker" music video. In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah expressed that recording songs for "Someone's Ugly Daughter" helped her cope with her anger. It also helped Mariah get "through some dark days." Additionally, she also described the experience as "weirdly good" and "satirical."

In 2003, Mariah was questioned about the naming of her recording company "Crave Records." She then answered:

It came from a song I wrote that no one’s ever heard. It’s a secret. One day I’ll talk about it.

In 2020, Mariah revealed in her memoir that "The Crave Song" was actually "Demented."

Demented is the fifth track from the album that consist of 11 total songs. Clarissa Dane is the lead vocalist of the song and Mariah provided backing vocals.

Song Lyrics[]

The lyrics to the song "Demented" express an intense craving for someone or something. The verses use metaphors to describe the feeling of needing something so badly that it's like being pregnant without pickles and ice cream or playing "Spin-the-bottle" alone. The chorus repeats the phrase "I crave you" and emphasizes the intensity of this feeling by adding "till I turn blue." The bridge acknowledges the "demented" nature of this craving and the inability to prevent it. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus and the admission that the speaker is "so demented."

Music video[]

The official music video, directed by Mariah Carey, was uploaded to YouTube on October 25, 2009.[3]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
It’s like they bein’ pregnant
Without pickles and ice cream
It’s like when you whisper
What you really want to scream

[Chorus]
I crave you, I crave you, I crave you
I crave you, I crave you, and crave you

[Verse 2]
It’s kinda like playing
“Spin-the-bottle” all alone
It’s kinda like talking
On a broken telephone

[Chorus]
I crave you, I crave you, I crave you
Till I turn blue
I crave you, and crave you, and crave you

[Bridge]
It’s so demented
I have to vent this
I am cemented
I can’t prеvent it

It’s so dementеd
I have to vent this
I am cemented
I can’t prevent it

[Verse 3]
It’s almost like eighteen
Hours on a carousel
It’s almost like being
Trapped inside a padded cell

[Chorus]
I crave you, I crave you, I crave you
Till I turn blue
I crave you, and crave you, and crave you

I crave you, I crave you, I crave you (can’t stop craving you)
Til I turn blue
I crave you, and crave you, and crave you

I crave you, I crave you, I crave you (can’t stop craving you)
Til I turn blue
I crave you, and crave you, and crave you

I’m so demented
