Aretha Franklin was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who was known as the "Queen of Soul." Born in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 25, 1942, Franklin began singing gospel music as a child and went on to become one of the most successful and influential musicians of all time. Franklin's powerful voice and soulful interpretations of R&B, pop, gospel, and classical music earned her numerous awards and accolades, including 18 Grammy Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1987, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first woman to receive this honor.[1] Carey and Franklin have spoken highly of each other in interviews. Carey has referred to Franklin as an inspiration and a major influence on her own music, and the two have shared the stage at VHS's Divas Live 1998 for performances of the songs "Chain of Fools" and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.[2] Between 1990-1991, Carey also covered Franklin's song "Don't Play That Song For Me (You Lied)" on multiple occasions.[3]
Relationship[]
Carey has always expressed her admiration for Franklin. During the 1992 Grammy Awards when Carey performed the song "If It's Over," she expressed how nervous she was for her performance by saying "thank god I didn't faint when I saw Aretha Franklin in the front row."[4] In 1998, the pair collaborated on performances of the song "Chain of Fools" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" for the Divas Live 1998 concert. In 2004, there were plans for Carey to collaborate with Franklin on a duet album. In a UK Flava article from 2004, it says, "According to a Hollywood Reporter, Carey, who's early hits such as Vision of Love, Make It Happen and Anytime You Need A Friend showed the strong influence of her early heroes Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, is being lined up for an appearance of Aretha's planned duet album."[5] The duet album ended up being a compilation album titled "Jewels in the Crown: All-Star Duets with the Queen" which featured the "Chain of Fools" performance from 1998.[6]
