All in Your Mind is the sixth track of Mariah Carey's self-titled debut album. It was released on June 12, 1990 through Columbia Records. The song was written by Mariah and Ben Marguiles and produced by Ben Marguiles & Ric Wake.
Background[]
"All in Your Mind" is a song about a person who feels distant from their partner and is struggling with misunderstandings in their relationship. Carey is trying to reassure their partner that their love is still there and encourages them to trust and believe in their love. The chorus repeats the idea that the person's fears and doubts are just in their mind and that they should hold on and not worry. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing that the love is real and present, despite the doubts of the other person.
Critical reception[]
In his review of the song, Chris Nickson states: “All in Your Mind” was another ballad, one based around a strong, memorable chorus, which briefly showcased the extreme high end of Mariah’s vocal reach. (Probably not since the late Minnie Ripperton had anyone managed to reach so high a note on a record.) Built around some basic keyboard arpeggios—played here by Ben Margulies—the two short verses merely acted as bridges between choruses, the song’s real muscle.[1]
Demo[]
On July 24, 2020, Mariah posted a snippet of the demo-version of the song to Twitter. This version included a new sustained G5 belt that was not in added to the official studio version of the song.[2]
Live Performances[]
The first released performance of "All in Your Mind" was backstage Saturday Night Live in 1990.[3] This performance was an a capella of the song which included the chorus of the song and whistle notes. "All in Your Mind" was also part of the set-list 1993 Music Box Tour.
Lyrics[]
Come closer
You seem so far away
There's something I know you need to say
I feel your emotions
When I look in your eyes
[Verse 2]
Your silence
Whispering misunderstandings
There's so much you need to realize
You'll feel my emotions
If you look in my eyes
[Chorus]
Hey, darling
I know you think my love is slipping away
But, baby, it's all in your mind (Yes)
Don't worry
Hold on tight and hear me when I say
Baby, it's all in your mind (Yeah. Yeah. Ooh)
[Verse 3]
Believe me
I believe in you
There's nothing this feeling couldn't do
Move closer, my darling
Feel the love in my eyes (Yes)
[Chorus]
Hey, darling
I know you think my love is slipping away
But, baby, it's all in your mind (Yes)
Don't worry
Hold on tight and hear me when I say
Baby, it's all in your mind (Yeah. Yes)
I know you feel my love
In your mind, yeah
[Chorus]
Hey, darling
Well, I know you think my love is slipping away
But, baby, it's all in your mind (Yes, yes)
Don't worry
Hold on tight and hear me when I say
Baby, it's all in your mind (Yeah)
Baby, it's all in your mind (Yes, uh, uh, hmm, hmm)
Baby, it's all in your mind (Mind, oh, yeah, baby, ooh, darling
Got to let you know, baby
Baby, it's all in your mind
You know my love is good now, baby, yes
Baby, it's all in your mind
Baby, it's all in your mind (Yeah, darling)
Baby, it's all in your mind (Wow, ooh, ooh, ooh)
Baby, it's all in your mind
Baby, it's all in your mind (Oh)
